Make Your Own Mosquito Repellent

(Modern – Mosquitos are nasty little creatures that feast on the blood of innocent hikers, campers and barbecuers alike. In fact, in many areas of the world, simply stepping outside is enough to be swarmed by the vampiric nuisances.

There are over the counter repellents that can keep the little monsters at bay, but not everyone is comfortable with spraying themselves down with chemical concoctions (not to mention the stench). What if there was a way to repel mosquitoes naturally, and to come out smelling like a flower?

Marigold: A Natural Repellant

Marigolds are annual flowers known to repel a wide variety of insects, including mosquitoes. Growing marigolds around the house, in pots on the patio or even alongside the other plants in the garden, can keep a variety of bugs away. In addition, marigolds are known to repel deer and rabbits who may look to feast on unprotected gardens. Not only will marigolds repel unwanted bugs and animal invaders, but they will also attract good insects such as pollinators and ladybugs.

Other plants known to repel mosquitoes include:

  • Lavender
  • Citronella grass
  • Rosemary
  • Catnip
  • Basil
  • Mint
  • Sage

Put it to Use

By placing these plants in strategic areas, a natural barrier is created to keep mosquitos from feasting on those nearby. Additionally, the essential oils these plants create, combined with apple cider vinegar and distilled water, create a potent mosquito repellant.
