Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the WHO, has been accused of being “bought” by the Chinese government. Pompeo presented the allegation during a private meeting with British members of Parliament. Tuesday Pompeo told them that US intelligence shows Tedros was bought by China to secure the job.
Pompeo accused the WHO of being “a political, not science-based organization,” though he did not present evidence to prove his claim of Tedros being “bought.”
A spokesperson for the WHO stated to Business Insider that the organization was not aware of the allegation, rejecting it and calling it unfounded.
Pompeo visited the UK on Tuesday after Prime Minister Johnson stated that the UK would remove Chinese telecoms Huawei from the country’s 5G network. He gave a deadline of 2027, stating the removal was due to national security concerns. The UK government credits the US’ tough sanctions on the Chinese firm to change its position on the matter.
Pompeo’s visit is also seen as a US effort to convince the UK and other European allies to take a tougher stance against China, due to human rights violations against the Uighurs.
