Bartering, or the trade of goods and services without the use of money, has been around for a very long time. Dating back to ancient civilizations, it has been an essential aspect of the advancement of mankind. In modern times, however, many people mistakingly see bartering as a lost art – one that no longer has a place in society.

The truth is, people barter far more often than they realize, just not in the same ways their forefathers did. For example, trading one vehicle for another is bartering. Agreeing to help weed a garden in exchange for fruits and vegetables is also bartering.

However, it does take a certain amount of skill to barter successfully. The following video explains some useful barter skills that can be a big help:

 

Bartering isn’t always about trading one item for another; sometimes, it’s to receive a service. For example, not everyone knows how to garden, but people who do will be able to use their knowledge in exchange for other items or services. The same goes for water purification, mechanics and medical services. All are important, but only a fraction of people have the skills. Others will be willing to pay for those services.

Bartering is an important aspect of our lives whether we realize it or not. We might not do a lot of it right now, but it could be the currency of the future.
