Why Having a Dog is Important When SHTF

There’s no doubt that dogs are man’s best friend. For thousands of years, dogs have stood by mankind, helped hunt, and offered protection and companionship. Dogs have become a part of many of our families and are essential for many of us. That importance will only grow in a post-collapse environment.

Two of the biggest reasons people get dogs are for protection or companionship. Typically, those who get a dog get a 2-for-1 package between the two. However, that’s not where your dog’s usefulness stops.

Many dog breeds are built for work tasks such as hunting, herding, or searching, all of which are critical after SHTF. Dogs, from a protective standpoint, serve as a deterrent and early warning system. They can even be trained to assist in a fight.

Dogs can help people with health problems make it through the day by opening doors or bringing them any items they need. If you live in a colder climate, dogs supply an external source of heat. The two of you can help each other stay warm. After all, who doesn’t love to cuddle with their beloved furry friend?

The number of reasons you may need a dog after SHTF is extensive. For that reason, it’s nearly impossible to list every reason you should have a dog after a large-scale disaster.
