DIY Hair Shampoo

In a survival situation, such as a grid-down event, maintaining personal hygiene will be incredibly important. Staying clean could be the difference between keeping healthy and falling ill from any variety of diseases. If basic necessities like shampoo are no longer available, chances are high that finding a doctor will be nearly impossible as well.

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. With that in mind, here is a simple recipe to make shampoo to help stay clean when SHTF:

What You Will Need:

  • ¾ cup water
  • ¾ cup castile soap
  • 35-40 drops essential oil (your choice)
  • 1 ½ tsp jojoba oil
  • shampoo bottle (or empty dish soap bottles)

Using a funnel, add water, castile soap and jojoba oil to the bottle. Shake well. Add essential oils and shake vigorously.

There you have it! Your very own hair shampoo. If you’d like to see the process, watch the following video from Our Oily House:

Keep in mind that this natural shampoo won’t be like the store-bought varieties. There aren’t any chemicals or additives to bring on the bubbles you’re used to. It’ll also take some time for this natural shampoo to bring your hair back to its natural state, so it may seem greasy during the transition. Once this period subsides, you’ll actually have to wash your hair less often.
