Power in Your Pocket Change

Power in Your Pocket Change

As the saying goes, if you see a penny and you pick it up, all day long, you will have good luck — or in this case, power. Yes, you read that right, power! Hard to believe, but people have proven you can generate electricity from pennies. Granted, you may not power your entire house, but you can provide enough for a few small items.

What You Will Need:

  • 7 pennies 1982 or newer
  • 6 cardboard pieces cut like a penny
  • ¾ cup lemon juice
  • Sandpaper sheet
  • 1 piece aluminum foil cut like a penny
  • Electrical tape
  • LED light

Sand down one side of each penny until only the zinc appears. Drop pieces of cardboard in lemon juice for 5 to 10 minutes. Starting with the aluminum foil, stack each penny zinc side up, alternating with a blotted piece of cardboard. Repeat, stacking the pennies and cardboard until you reach the final penny, zinc side up. Tape everything in place, ensuring no pennies are touching each other. Now you have a penny battery! Attach your LED leads, one to each end, and you have light!
